Matchday 34, the final day of the season, was full of excitement and intrigue as always, seeing Robert Lewandowski break the all-time single-season goal-scoring record, FC Köln escape relegation at the death, and Werder Bremen flounder into the 2. Bundesliga. Here is Rhys Desmond’s Team of the Week for Matchday 34!
FC Köln have saved themselves from relegation desperation on the final day of the Bundesliga season, snatching a late goal against FC Schalke to win 1-0. The Billy Goats now go into the relegation/promotion playoff against the third place 2. Bundesliga side, to be decided tomorrow.
Relegation threatened FC Köln might not be so relegation threatened anymore, after a smash and grab 3-2 victory over FC Augsburg on Friday April 23, 2021. It was FC Köln’s first ever away win against Augsburg in the Bundesliga and crucially pulls them out of the bottom three. The win comes after Die Geißböcke had one of their most impressive performances of the season against RB Leipzig in mid-week, securing a stunning 2-1 victory. To follow it up with something so spectacular will now leave Friedhelm Funkel’s team in good spirits going into the final three matches of the season.
